Louisiana State Poetry Society (LSPS) was established on October 9, 1954, Mary Berthelot Wall and Ethel Harvey of Baton Rouge. Their objective in forming LSPS was “to promote and further the interest and appreciation of poetry and the poetic spirit.”
Determined to unify other state poetry societies, on October 17, 1959 Mary Berthelot Wall founded the National Federation of State Poetry Societies (NFSPS). Read more about NFSPS history click HERE.
Louisiana State Poetry Society hosts two events every year to bring members together and announce the winners of the society’s poetry contest’s.
The annual Fall Festival is held in Baton Rouge in mid-October in celebration of the founding of LSPS in 1954 and to recognize National Poetry Day. The Society’s annual Officers Business meeting is also held in October.
A Spring Festival is held in April in celebration of National Poetry Month.
